Black is beautiful...
so, i have been in the market for my vogue “black issue” every since the first photos leaked across the blogosphere. i went to my tried and true book store first because i wasn’t sure of the issue date in the US and he’d told me “come back next tuesday“ — which i fully intended to do.
time passes, and i happen to go to borders one day to take a gander to see if it’s in yet, “come back tomorrow, you’re too early.”
ok *sad face*
let’s fast forward to me getting too busy to go when it came out — thus having to go through the frenzy of walking from bookstore to bodega to bookstore to bodega and back at all hours of the day or night — only to find out that everyone was completely sold out. *even sadder face* but there was still hope! Vogue IT planned to do a reprint. YES!!!
meanwhile i am forced to see updated facebook statuses that announce with glee “i got my copy na nanny boo boo” or emails from friends proclaiming like-minded feminista’s just bought an extra one on a whim for a friend!!! what manner of world is this???!?! and why do i not have these types of friends???
I started my search again. this time I made it a point to try my local black owned bookstore to double support my people’s pocketbooks (i know vogue is mainstream, but you get my point).
*scans bookshelf* nothing. asks clerk, “do you have any of the black vogue issue?”
“I’m sorry we don’t have any more,” *and the final dagger comes when she says* “we have a case right here *points* that someone ordered but hasn’t picked up yet.”
that was not her offer to sell me one. how rude. i leave, fearing i will never get one and text dliteful that i’ve had no luck once again. now mind you, by this point i’ve seen the book online – and also held a copy myself at my client’s office – and know that there are no ads with black women & there is basically a disconnect in that regard — but i do not have my OWN, and this is what saddens me.
fast forward to today — i go back to my old faithful spot near the time warner center again, really only because i was in the area and said what the heck. *scans bookshelf* nothing.
*deep sigh* “you wouldn’t happen to have anymore of the…”
*nods knowingly* “yes, come around here I have some for you” — I mentally prepare myself for them to be on sale at black market level prices…
NOPE! Regular price, and he had about 8 or 10! Some had fuzzy or messed up covers… so i sifted through to get a clean one for dliteful and grabbed 2 for myself (1 for keeps, the other for flipping through).
